University of Virginia World War II records, 1938, 1942-1946, 1951.

World War II records gathered from several archive and manuscript collections consist chiefly of correspondence; applications, course outlines, instructors' notes, student papers, course work, examinations and grades; financial material including invoices; photographs; and historical material and speeches about World War II. Correspondence consists chiefly of cards and letters to professors Joseph L. Vaughan and William Kepner from former students; letters to Isabella Burnet from B.F.D. Runk and a Lt. Tom Brown; and some correspondence concerning the 8th Evacuation Hospital Unit. University of Virginia involvement in World War II is documented by papers of the pre-meteorological training program including papers from humanities courses taught by University of Virginia Librarian Lester Jesse Cappon, 1943-1945; papers of the Minute Men of 1940, and papers of the Committee on the Preservation of Material on World War II, 1941-1946, which includes minutes of several meetings, and lists of faculty and staff of U. Va. in the armed services and related fields together with a proposal for a comprehensive war history of the University of Virginia to be written by William C. Peden. There are also medical school war service cards for medical alumni in the service; a history of the 3317th Army Specialized Training Unit; remarks of James Hart on V-E day and Rear Admiral Lamont Pugh's speech to medical almumni "And so it rolls." Miscellaneous items of interest include a certificate and lapel pin issued to the Rouss Physical Laboratory by the U.S. Navy for research on guided missles; a commendation to the University of Virginia for participation in the V-12 Program by James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy; photographs of the Dawn Patrol training.; minutes from the 1941 annual reunion of members of the University of Virginia's Base Hospital #41; and form letters from Chinese missionaries to [Harry Clemons?] on their lives and events in China, 1938-1944.
